The Wayward Orchard: A Bright Citrus Amaro Cocktail with Orange Bitters
An easy low-ABV citrus apéritif to lift the spirits
There are days when I crave citrus in an almost unreasonable way. Not just a squeeze of lemon in water. I want brightness. I want sparkle. I want that sharp little lift that wakes me up again.
That’s how The Wayward Orchard came to be.
This amaro cocktail is simple, bright, and just a little bit wild. Herbal and bittersweet from Amaro Montenegro. Effervescent from lime sparkling water. And finished with Orange Bitters that pull everything into focus.
It’s technically an apéritif. But in practice, it’s an excuse to pause before dinner and make something beautiful for yourself.
If you’ve never worked with amaro before, this is a very friendly place to start.
What is an amaro, anyway?
Amaro is a category of Italian herbal liqueurs known for their bittersweet flavor. Every bottle has its own personality. Some lean deeply bitter. Some are dark and brooding. Others are floral or citrusy. Amaro Montenegro is bright and layered with over 40 botanicals. The exact blend is a secret, which somehow makes it feel more romantic.
Amaro is often enjoyed as an apéritif or digestif because of its herbal qualities. Bitterness stimulates digestion. But you don’t need to be caring for your belly to enjoy it. Think of it as a bottle that adds intrigue. Herbal. Citrus. A little mysterious. And surprising easy to sip.
Why this makes the perfect citrus apéritif
An apéritif is simply a drink served before a meal. The word comes from a Latin word that means ‘to open’. An apéritif is meant to open the appetite. Open an evening. Open your heart and mind. There’s something quietly seductive about that idea.
Apéritifs also tend to be lower in alcohol. They’re about easing you in. This citrus apéritif fits beautifully into that tradition. It’s a low ABV cocktail, sparkling and refreshing, with just enough bitterness to keep it interesting.
And if you live in the Northern Hemisphere like I do, citrus in the winter feels like a lifeline. A bright amaro cocktail can shift the mood in an instant. Bringing warmth and just enough light to carry you through.
Why Orange Bitters make it sing
Here’s where it comes together. Amaro already has complexity. Montenegro in particular carries notes of orange peel, warm spice, and soft florals. But when you add Orange Bitters, all those flavors sharpen. The citrus lifts. The botanicals bloom. And the sweetness feels more balanced.
Bitters are small but mighty. A simple dash transforms this from a sparkling amaro drink into a layered orange bitters cocktail that tastes intentional.
The Wayward Orchard
An easy, low-ABV citrus amaro cocktail with Orange Bitters
makes: 1 cocktail
3 oz Amaro Montenegro
3 oz lime sparkling water
1 dropper Orange Bitters
orange wheel, to garnish
Build this drink in a rocks glass with ice. Add everything except the garnish and give it a gentle stir. Garnish with an orange wheel.
Make it your own
This easy apéritif cocktail is meant to inspire play.
Try blood orange sparkling water instead of lime. Swap in a different amaro for more bitter or more floral direction. (Averna is a great alternative.) Add a squeeze of fresh citrus if you want to change the flavor profile.
Once you get comfortable working with amaro and bitters, you start to see possibility everywhere. That’s the real spirit of The Wayward Orchard. A little wandering. Exploring citrus. And permission to create more delight in your glass.
